KPV is a tripeptide corresponding to the C-terminal fragment of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Research has examined its anti-inflammatory activity in cell and animal models, with particular attention to the observation that this activity appears separable from the pigmentation-related melanocortin receptor effects of the parent hormone.
